| Division of Urology |
Introduction
Upon the inauguration of the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital in 1981, the Division of Urology is already a member of the Department of Surgery. At present we offer comprehensive care and treatment for diseases of the urinary system for both sexes, pediatric urology and diseases of the male reproductive system. Other services include management of medical (i.e., non-surgical) problems such as urinary infections, and surgical problems such as the correction of congenital abnormalities (epispadias, hypospadias, and inguinal hernias), surgical management of the adrenal glands and tumors of the retroperitoneum, and the surgical management of cancers.
Staff members At present our staff include 1 division chief and 6 attending physician.
Specialties Our staff specializes in minimal invasive surgery for renal, adrenal glands and retroperitoneal tumors, and treatment of urinary stones (ureteroscopic lithotripsy , percutaneous nephrolithotripsy and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy), male infertility and erectile dysfunction, female and pediatric urology, urine incontinence, and venereal disease.
Facilities Our division is equipped with facilities for laparoscopic surgery, transurethral surgery, ureteroscopic lithotripsy and ureteral biopsy, percutaneous nephrolithotripsy, video urodynamic studies, biofeedback machine for treatment of urine incontinence, and a stone center (which is equipped with an ESWL) for treatment of urinary stones. Recently we upgrade our facilities by adding Green light laser PVP for treatment of BPH, and Holmium:YAG Laser for intracorporeal lithotripsy.
Teaching and Research Every morning we had staff meeting wherein we discussed and endorsed cases for operation. We also had weekly journal readings and teaching rounds, and monthly combined meeting with the nephrology and radiology services. Our library is also equipped with the latest edition of urology textbooks and journals which our residents and faculties may borrow to update new knowledge in urology. Our division is also endorsed by the Taiwan Urology Society to train 2 residents yearly. Present researches undertaken include: treatment for voiding dysfunction, uro-oncology, and urinary stones.
Future developments 1. Strengthen our research capabilities: by encouraging young staff to pursue Master and Ph D degree in Urology here in abroad. 2. Upgrade our system for treatment of urologic oncology by cooperating with the oncology and radio-oncology services in treating patients with malignant tumors of the urinary system. 3. Upgrade our service rendered by joining with the development of a new wing plan, bringing in new facilities to upgrade our clinical service in diagnosing and treatment of our patient’s urologic conditions. 4. Concentrate our resources in upgrading our core development: upgrading our laser surgery technique, research in the treatment of uro-oncology, ureteral stones, and voiding dysfunction.
