Core Competence 3C -2T -1M-1N

To provide better medical services for residents in the surrounding area, FEMH developed our core competencies, which are 3C2T1M1N: Cardiovascular medicine, Cancer (Oncology), Critical care, Traumatology, Transplantation, Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Nephrology, to meet people’s needs. Other 79 medical departments all advance new medical technologies and services. Especially in the quality of diabetes care, infection control, suicide prevention, vulnerable care, health promotion and other related fields performed well and won many awards.

Cardiovascular medicine

We offer our cardiovascular patients the most efficient care: the most comprehensive diagnosis and treatment within the shortest hospital stay, the most streamlined process of surgery, including off-pump coronary artery bypass, minimally invasive valvular cardiac surgery, open and endovascular aortic surgery, correction or palliation of congenital heart disease, and a variety of peripheral vascular surgery such as hemodialysis access creation and maintenance, arterial occlusive disease bypass and angioplasty, varicose vein surgery, etc. We have done more than 8,000 cases of cardiac surgery, including 4000 CABG, and 2700 valvular surgery.

We are the top-ranked nationwide as following: more than 80% coronary bypass are off-pump, more than 8,000 endoscopic vein harvest cases have been done, and more than 85% valvular heart surgery are minimally invasive, which is our core expertise and we can operate on mitral, aortic, and tricuspid valves. We perform lots of non-sternotomy minimally invasive (smaller wound) valvular and coronary surgery, such as coronary artery bypass through a small left thoracotomy.

In minimal invasive heart surgery, heart (cardiac) surgeons perform heart surgery through small incisions in the right side of ones chest, as an alternative to open-heart surgery. The smaller incision and minimally invasive heart surgery can have less pain, less scarring, shorter hospital stays after surgery, lower risk of infection and bleeding and shorter recovery time.

Patients undergo minimally invasive heart surgery usually return home 2 to 5 days after the procedure.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the top ten cause of death. Because of that, the early diagnosis, effective treatment, and preventive measures are subjects that cannot be ignored. Since Cardiovascular is the core of the hospital's medical expertise, we hope to provide a comprehensive, immediate and appropriate services. We are committed to providing the best quality care to the community, and serving as the preferred cardiovascular center. Coronary Heart Disease Care Team covers from the treatment of coronary heart disease diagnosis, treatment to prevention. In the hope of providing better medical cares, our team have internal and external heart surgeons, severe and anesthesia health care specialists, nutritionists, rehabilitation physicians, physiotherapists, social workers respiratory therapists and other specialists.

Cancer

In October 2014, FEMH established the first Cancer Prevention Center in New Taipei City. FEMH has "Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Quality Certification." Our cancer diagnosis and treatment have a number of national and even international standards. We do more than 45,000 cancer screenings each year and more than 3,000 cancer patients are new diagnoses. FEMH has organized nine cross-disciplinary medical teams including gastric cancer, esophageal cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer, head and neck cancer, hematological tumors, and gynecological cancer. The Department of Radiation Oncology is equipped with linear accelerators and two navigation spiral knives. In response to the recent rapid increase in cancer patients, FEMH continues to advance new therapeutic drugs and technologies.

In addition, we focus especially on clinical researches and cancer treatments. While advancing the surgical techniques and introducing latest treatments drugs, we have developed more effective chemotherapy with lower toxicity and new type of radiotherapy using state-of-the-art equipment. Our goal is to prolong and improve patients’ lives.

Critical Care

FEMH has a total of 102 beds in intensive care units including internal medicine, surgery, heart, neurology, and pediatrics, accounting for 12% of acute general beds. FEMH is responsible for emergency and critical care, this put us to establish the Department of Critical Care Medicine to coordinate integrate critical care specialists at all levels together to improve the quality of patient care. FEMH also equips a bed scheduling mechanism to accelerate the efficiency of management.

Our intensive care unit is equipped with a 24-hour intensive care specialist, and major emergency life-sustaining equipment such as respiratory, renal treatment, ECMO, etc., which can provide treatment for severe influenza and other acute and severe patients. Also FEMH has an intensive care unit special for children and newborns.

Transplantation

FEMH is pioneer in Transplantation. We have completed multiple heart, kidney, liver, small intestine, corneal transplants and bone marrow transplants, including the world’s first Three-heart transplant with two donors, and another 4 Two-hearted persons with heterotopic heart transplantation.

There are only 30 bowel transplant centers in the world. FEMH is the first medical center approved by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to perform small bowel transplants. Our professional team had done 29 operations, with a success rate of 100%, and won the Bronze Award of the National Biotechnology and Medical Quality Award in 2013.

In terms of liver transplantation, and living donor liver transplantation has been routinely performed. We also pioneer in Asia to complete the second full laparoscopic living donor liver transplantation among the world. We teamed up specialists to assist Vietnamese largest surgical medical center, VietDec Hospital technical guidance of living donor liver transplantation.

Traumatology

FEMH has passed the "Severe Emergency Hospital Certification” by the Ministry of Health and Welfare's emergency medical treatment capability classification appraisal. FEMH’s emergency serves an average of about 400 people per day, and the service volume ranks among the top four in the country. More than 10% of the trauma patients admitted to the emergency are severe trauma patients. In order to rescue these patients ASAP, we established the Department of Traumatology in the Department of Surgery, and coordinated other departments, including Department of Traumatology, Cardiovascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Rectal Surgery, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Pediatric Surgery, and Imaging Medicine Department and Anesthesiology Department together as a trauma team. This team is responsible for the rescue and treatment of patients with multiple traumas in 24 hours.

FEMH trauma team consists of attending physicians who work a a 24-hour shift. They are able to arrive at the emergency within 10 minutes to treat the patient. And give appropriate first aid treatment according to the condition. Step 1: Initiate emergency surgery; step 2: Mobilize the ICU in time; and step 3: Coordinate with relevant department physicians to diagnose and treat patients. We regularly have meetings to review the quality of trauma care, discuss patient conditions and follow-up treatment plans. In addition, we have two-way feedback procedure to review the starting standards to strengthen quality management. Recently, the in-hospital mortality rate of severe trauma patients is only about 12.0%, which is within the range of 10-15% of international standards. With the efforts of team members, we will continue to increase clinical human resources, train professional trauma teachers, strengthen quality control, improve the trauma system, and continue to fulfill the hospital’s goal. We will continue developing trauma medicine, hoping to become a model for the New Taipei City Severe Trauma Center to protect the public.
