Breast cancer has remained the most common cancer among women in Taiwan for many years, with the number of diagnosed cases continuing to rise. One contributing factor is the increased public awareness and participation in breast cancer screening, enabling early detection and timely treatment of early-stage or in-situ disease — improving outcomes and women’s health.
Beginning in 2025, Taiwan’s Health Promotion Administration has expanded the eligibility of free mammography screening from ages 45–69 to 40–74, once every two years. While the expanded screening allows more women to identify abnormalities at an early stage. However, many patients experience anxiety and uncertainty as they await further evaluation and diagnosis.
Traditionally, breast imaging, specialist consultation, pathology, and treatment arrangements are scheduled across different departments and timepoints — requiring multiple hospital visits, long waiting periods, and added emotional stress. To shorten the diagnostic process and enhance care efficiency, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital officially launched the Breast Medical Center on November 17, 2025. The Center adopts a cross-disciplinary one-stop service model, providing comprehensive care from examination to diagnosis and treatment all in one place.
One-Stop Integration: More efficient Diagnosis and Treatment
The Breast Medical Center unites specialists in breast surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and medical radiologist. Patients can complete mammography, breast ultrasound, and real-time physician interpretation in a single visit. If findings are suspicious, a core needle biopsy can be arranged immediately — significantly reducing diagnostic waiting time.
Take Ms. Wu, a 35-year-old engineer in the Hsinchu Science Park, as an example. Due to shift work, she rarely had time for health checkups. After noticing a lump in her right breast, she scheduled a visit to our one-stop clinic while staying in Banqiao. On the same day, she completed imaging studies and received an on-site assessment, followed by a biopsy that afternoon. Within a week, she was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer and promptly received surgical treatment. Genomic testing confirmed a low-risk subtype; therefore she required only radiation therapy and endocrine therapy afterward.
Ms. Wu shared, “The one-stop process saved me so much time. I completed the entire diagnostic pathway and surgery within a week and was able to quickly return to work.”
Patient-Centered Design: Privacy, Respect, and Comfort
The Center’s space was designed to ensure privacy and comfort for women undergoing sensitive examinations. A separate waiting and examination area is provided for female patients, while male companions remain in designated zones outside. Patients can complete all tests and consultations without needing to move between departments wearing examination gowns. A warm indoor design and an all-female professional care team help patients feel respected, supported, and at ease.
Advanced Technology & Human-Centered Care: Comprehensive Breast Cancer Management
The Breast Medical Center offers six core features:
‧ Minimally invasive & advanced breast cancer surgery
‧ Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for postoperative breast cancer
‧ One-stop, multidisciplinary service
‧ Women-only breast specialist clinic
‧ Early postoperative rehabilitation program
‧ Multimodal analgesia (MMA) for optimal postoperative pain control
Among them, SBRT shortens a traditional multi-week radiation therapy course to just five sessions, with equal effectiveness and fewer side effects — earning the 2025 Symbol of National Quality (SNQ) Excellence Award in Radiation Therapy.
The multimodal analgesia (MMA) approach reduces postoperative discomfort and opioid use, promoting faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. Our early rehabilitation program helps patients regain shoulder mobility and daily function sooner while lowering the risk of lymphedema.
With a focus on efficiency, privacy, and empathy, we aim to ensure that every patient receives timely and personalized care through every stage — from screening and diagnosis to surgery and recovery.
